Porsche Macan 2021: next SUV to be fully electric

Porsche has announced that its next Macan SUV will be powered exclusively by electricity.

The German car giant confirmed in a statement that its next mid-size crossover will follow the all-new Taycan saloon, due to arrive at the end of 2019, and the Taycan Cross Turismo SUV, as the company’s third electric-only model.

The “fascinating move” will see the Macan – of which there is currently no electric or plug-in hybrid version – adopt the 800-volt charging technology that will make its debut on Taycan later this year, says Auto Express.

Commenting on the electric Macan news, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG Oliver Blume, said, “Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character,”

Details about the new Porsche Macan are still scarce, but Porsche has confirmed that it will run on the Premium Platform Electric architecture, which is co-developed with Audi. It has also confirmed that it’ll use a similar 800-volt electric drive system to the Taycan, which suggests it could share that car’s ultra-rapid 350kW charging ability.

Although the carmaker is keeping the rest of the Macan’s specs under wraps, Autocar is tipping the new SUV to feature “a twin motor set-up and standard four-wheel drive”.As with the current petrol-powered version of the SUV, the electric Macan is expected to be offered with a number of power outputs in order to cater for a wide array of budgets.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said the carmaker will be “investing more than €6bn [£5.15bn] in electric mobility” by 2022.He added that the company will switch 50% of its cars over to all-electric powertrains by 2025.

Autocar reports that the new model is expected to go on sale in 2021.
